D’Angelo, the Grammy-winning soul powerhouse behind Brown Sugar and Untitled (How Does It Feel), has died.

He was 51.

The R&B star who rose to prominence in the nineties passed away Tuesday morning in New York City after a private battle with pancreatic cancer, according to sources close to his family and former manager Kedar Massenburg.

Though he never spoke publicly about his illness, it’s believed he had been undergoing treatment for several months.

D’Angelo exploded onto the music scene in 1995 with a sound that blended funk, soul, and raw emotion like few others. His talent drew collaborators like Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, and Q-Tip, while his fans were captivated by his smoky voice and bold artistry.

Over his career, he earned four Grammys, including Best R&B Album for Voodoo in 2001 and Black Messiah in 2016. Really Love and the unforgettable Untitled (How Does It Feel) also earned him wins and cemented his place in R&B history.

Untitled wasn’t just a song, it was a cultural moment. The stripped-down (literally) video featured D’Angelo alone in a black void, seemingly bare, and it left a lasting impression on fans. There had been whispers last year from longtime collaborator Raphael Saadiq that D’Angelo was working on a new project, sparking hope for a return to the spotlight. Sadly, that music will now remain unheard.

D’Angelo leaves behind two sons and a daughter.

His first son was with singer Angie Stone, who herself passed away earlier this year in a car accident.
