One of Jamaica’s prized waterfall attractions, Reach Falls, has been closed to the public over the past week due to suspected chemical contamination, Urban Development Corporation (UDC) has revealed.
In a statement on Wednesday (April 25), UDC said that during a joint site visit by the company’s representatives, National Fisheries Authority (NFA) and National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA), it was determined that it is in the best interest of the public that the facilities remain closed. It is suspected that chemicals were emptied into Driver’s River, which feeds Reach Falls.
UDC said that clean-up activities are now underway with the aim of having the waterfall opened in short order.
The corporation will advise once the facilities are reopened.
Reach Falls is one of several tourist attractions operated by the UDC.
