As hybrid work arrangements continue to reshape how Jamaicans work and interact, everyday opportunities for in-person connection are becoming less frequent, creating new challenges for how employees remain engaged, connected and feel a sense of belonging beyond the traditional office.
In response, Human Resources teams are increasingly being called on to design not just for productivity, but for the human experience of work, including wellbeing, morale and meaningful connection in a changing workplace landscape.
In Jamaica, sport has long served as a natural social bridge, bringing people together through shared experiences, healthy competition and camaraderie. It was this cultural reality that informed the Human Resources team at Red Stripe in the design of the Business League Games, an employee-focused initiative aimed at intentionally restoring connection in a hybrid work environment.

Launched on September 12, 2025, the Business League Games were developed following insights from the company’s annual Climate Survey, which assesses employee satisfaction, alignment and workplace culture. Rather than introducing a new concept, the initiative modernises Jamaica’s long-standing business league tradition, applying greater structure, inclusivity and sustainability to meet the needs of today’s workforce.
Led by Red Stripe’s Human Resources Department, the programme began as an internal staff engagement initiative before expanding to include other participating companies facing similar workplace challenges. The league operates as a closed, inter-company platform, open exclusively to employees of participating organisations and their specially invited guests.
According to Head of Human Resources Judon Bowden, the initiative was designed to respond to the changing dynamics of how employees connect.

“We were very intentional about choosing sport,” Bowden said. “It creates a different kind of connection one that feels natural, inclusive and rooted in shared experience, rather than forced or transactional.”
The Business League Games follow a structured competition format, combining round-robin play with knockout stages to encourage sustained participation and teamwork over several months. In 2025, the programme expanded beyond football to include netball, widening opportunities for participation across gender and skill levels.
One of the notable developments was the introduction of the Red Stripe Netball Champions Cup, which provided a renewed competitive platform for female employees. Four corporate teams competed between September and December, reflecting strong engagement and interest among participants.

Football remains a central pillar of the league, having evolved from an inter-department tournament into a 16-team inter-company competition involving several of Jamaica’s leading corporate organisations. The most recent football season concluded in January 2026.
Match days are designed as lively social spaces for employees of participating companies, characterised by music, team support and shared celebration, reinforcing connection and camaraderie across organisations.
Through a future-focused lens, organisers plan to introduce a dominoes competition as the next phase of the league, expanding participation through another culturally familiar activity, while maintaining the initiative’s employee-focused structure.
Through the Business League Games, Red Stripe’s HR leadership continues to demonstrate how intentional workplace programmes can help address the human realities of modern work, strengthening connection, wellbeing and workplace culture in an increasingly hybrid environment.
