Following what seemed to be a horrific career-ending car accident, Reggae Boy Michail Antonio has told head coach Steve McClaren that he will be back in action this summer.

On December 7, 2024, the West Ham striker crashed his Ferrari which left him with his femur broken in four places, that needed urgent surgery.

The 34-year-old has been out of action since then but McClaren remained just as optimistic as Antonio.

“He’s really positive in his rehab. He’s on the treadmill. He’s running and he tells me he’s gonna be ready for the summer,” revealed McClaren. “Knowing, Michail, that could happen. So, we keep our fingers crossed for that. You know, Michail is a warrior,” McClaren added.

Antonio, who will be 35 years old on March 28, made his debut for Jamaica on September 5, 2021, in a 0-3 defeat to Panama and scored his first goal for the Reggae Boyz on November 13, 2021, in a 1-1 draw with El Salvador.

The West Ham all-time top scorer with 68 goals, has not been so prolific for Jamaica having scored just five times from 21 games.

But McClaren is patiently waiting on his number one choice for the number nine position.

“He’s a true character. Great for the squad. Always bubbly. Always positive,” he pointed out.

McClaren said he spoke to him about two weeks ago and he was on the treadmill and running hence he is confident that he will come back in time for the World Cup qualifiers later this year.

“The one thing that he’s got, he said, he’s got motivation and when warriors have got motivation, they tend to achieve their goal and his goal is to be fit in the summer to help Jamaica qualify,” said McClaren.
