Newly appointed Reggae Boyz head coach Paul Hall wants to change Jamaica’s style of play for its remaining FIFA World Cup qualifying matches with the hope that it will yield the desired results.

Hall was announced as the interim head coach of Jamaica’s senior men’s team last week after the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) sacked Theodore Whitmore, who had been in charge since 2016.

After a poor run of form that sees the Reggae Boyz sitting sixth in the Concacaf Group standings with seven points from eight matches, the JFF decided to part company with the former Jamaica midfielder.

Hall is now tasked with leading the Reggae Boyz for the remainder of the campaign in the hope that the change will bring about a reversal of form for the Caribbean’s number-one team.

Hall, who is also an assistant coach at Queens Park Rangers in England, believes the task will be challenging but possible if the players are able to adapt to a more positive style of play.

 “It’s very difficult to change the personality of the team in the short term because we are looking for results and we are looking to just pick a team and a squad that is going to get us results. However, I do like to press really high. I do like to make sure that they are attack-minded and we like to pass the ball around, possession-based play,” said Hall during his first media session as head coach on Monday.

“How much of that can we get out in the short term, it’s going to be down to the work that we do beforehand, but tactically we are looking to press, counter-press and then just, hopefully, in the five phases of the game, try to dominate the opposition,” he added.

To be able to achieve these goals, Hall said he will need to put together the best possible roster for the final push for World Cup qualification.

“In the short term, we want to pick a squad of players that’s going to win us a game of football and that’s the policy. We’ve got to pick the best players who are going to win us games of football,” Hall explained.

He will get the chance to see how well the players are able to adapt to a new style of play when the team takes Peru in Peru on January 20, seven days before they play Mexico in their next WC qualifier at the National Stadium in Kingston.
