Jamaica’s Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw of Manchester City was the subject of online racist and misogynistic abuse following Sunday’s Women’s Super League 3-4 loss to Arsenal.
Manchester City upon receiving the information, released a statement condemning the act saying they were “appalled” and have confirmed the content has been shared with the relevant authorities to be investigated.
“Discrimination of any kind, either in stadiums or online, will not be tolerated and has absolutely no place inside or outside the game,” Manchester City said in a statement.
However, Shaw decided not to share the messages to avoid giving the culprits any publicity.
“Bunny has decided not to share the messages publicly so as not to give the oxygen of publicity to the vile individuals who sent them,” said the statement. “An investigation will follow, and the club offers our full support to Bunny following the disgusting treatment she’s received.”
The 28-year-old Reggae Girlz is the country’s all-time top scorer with 44 goals in 57 games the most by any female or male player.
Shaw who made her 100th appearance for City as a substitute on Sunday, has 86 goals for City and was named the Club’s Player of the Year in each of the last two seasons.
She has scored 9 goals in 11 games for City this season.
