Goals by Jody Brown and Kayla McKenna propelled Jamaica’s Reggae Girlz to a 2-0 win over Peru in their international friendly at Estadio Miguel Grau in Lima on Sunday (February 23).
Brown opened the scoring in the fifth minute before her strike partner McKenna sealed victory netting in the 52nd minute.
It was the first since 2022 that the Reggae Girlz are winning three consecutive games and the first win on South American soil since defeating Colombia 2-1 in 2018.
Head coach Hugh Busby said he knew Peru was going to be a good test but they got the result and managed the game efficiently as they continue to prepare for World Cup qualifiers.
“At end of the day, it’s about us getting a result and finding a way to get a result when you come to environments like this,” Busby pointed out.
“It’s what we’re preparing for when it comes to potential World Cup qualifiers on the horizon. But overall, I think what was really promising was the fact that we’re able to make a lot of subs, get a lot of young players, in some cases, their debut for them to come on and really sort of get the experience what it’s like to play international football in these environments,” he added.
The Reggae Girlz are playing without their influential captain Khadija Shaw and it was a very good win against a team whose style is similar to that of most Central American teams Jamaica might face in the World Cup qualifiers.
Jamaica are coming off back-to-back wins over South Africa and will meet Peru again on Wednesday (February 26) in Lima.
