Head coach of Jamaica’s Reggae Girlz Hugh Busby, was more than happy after his team won their two-game series against Peru as several young players got valuable experience.
The Reggae Girlz defeated Peru 2-0 on Sunday and 3-2 on Wednesday in Lima, without the influential skipper Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw and several other senior players.
“The prerequisite is always to get a result, but it’s with a performance and finding a way to win,” Busby noted.
Jody Brown and Kayla McKenna scored in the first game while Naya Cardoza, Reanna Blades and Tiffany Cameron scored in the second game.
Both Cardoza and Blades were scoring for the first time for Jamaica.

“Credit to Peru. They gave us a really tough game and we got off to a really good start. But we had to manage that over the line. More importantly, give the young players some valuable experience,” said Busby. “It’s going to be a little bit disjointed when you’ve got players coming in for the first time and players making their debuts and nerves, that go along with it. Credit to some of the senior heads for being able to manage it and help the young ones through.”
Jamaica are on a four-game winning streak heading into World Cup qualifiers as they try to make it three consecutive appearances at the FIFA World Cup.
“But overall, these two games proved valuable for us. We’ll gain the experience and for us as a staff, a moment to reflect. Some of these players have asked some questions, made themselves and put themselves in contention going forward,” said Busby. “We’ve got some pending games on the horizon, so, hopefully, we can finalize those. As I’ve always indicated, we need to utilize each and every window.”
According to Busby, he doesn’t want to give everyone a fair chance to impress and make themselves available for selection. “So, we can take a look and make sure we’re not missing anyone and making sure that we’re bringing opportunities for players to come through,” he added.
