Jamaica’s Reggae Girlz will face their Canadian football counterparts on September 22 in a high-stakes qualifier for a spot in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Canada Soccer has confirmed the match, which will take place in Jamaica. Four days later, on September 26, the Reggae Girls return for a reprise this time on Canadian home territory.

The game will be played at BMO Field in Toronto and the teams will be looking to book their spot at the Olympic Games next summer. Canada is the defending Gold medal champion after winning in Tokyo back in 2021.

Canada had a chance to secure qualification last summer at the CONCACAF Women’s Championship in Mexico but lost to the US in the final.

Canada won all three of its group stage matches, and defeated Jamaica 3-0 at the semi-final stage before falling 1-0 to USA in a tightly contested championship match. The Reggae Girlz, meanwhile, outlasted Costa Rica 1-0 in the third-place match, earing them an opportunity to compete for the final spot at Paris 2024.

Canada Soccer head women’s coach, Bev Priestman, commented, “following this summer’s FIFA Women’s World Cup, the squad will be excited to play such a critical match on home soil. The Olympic Games have such a special place in this team’s heart, so to start that journey at home with our fans after what we hope to be a successful and exciting summer will be amazing.”

Both Jamaican and Canadian women’s teams are heading to Australia and New Zealand to compete in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup but both teams have struggled financially.

It was recently confirmed by the players that the Jamaican Football Federation (JFF) wasn’t going to 100 per cent support them for the Women’s World Cup and so the team started a GoFundMe campaign.

Jamaica is in a World Cup group with France, Brazil, and Panama while Canada faces Nigeria, Ireland and hosts, Australia in Group B action, which begins July 20.
