The Caribbean Actuarial Association Conference (CAAC), marking its 35th staging on December 10-12, brought together over 300 professionals from across the region and North America at the Ocean Coral Hotel.

Held under the theme ‘Future-Proofing The Present’, the conference created a dynamic platform for strengthening technical competence and advancing leadership. The first day set the stage for meaningful professional development for its members and participants, featuring a powerful contribution from Make Your Mark Group’s managing director, Dr Jacqueline Coke-Lloyd.

In her session, Coke-Lloyd guided attendees through a meaningful exploration of how personal clarity forms the foundation of effective influence. She emphasised that leadership begins with understanding oneself—values, strengths, beliefs, purpose, and identity—and that this self-awareness is essential for navigating uncertainty, inspiring others, and leading with conviction.

Coke-Lloyd encouraged participants to embrace their individuality, recognise their inner strengths, and release their dependence on external affirmation. She illustrated how authenticity, predictability, and personal courage shape trustworthy leadership, while resilience and emotional intelligence help leaders grow through challenges. Attendees engaged in reflective exercises such as crafting their personal mission and vision statements, identifying their leadership stories, and evaluating the habits and behaviours that either support or hinder effective self-leadership.

A central message of her session was the importance of aligning personal passions, talents, and God-given purpose to create a leadership approach anchored in clarity and intention. By strengthening self-awareness, actuaries and other professionals are better positioned to elevate their impact, build stronger teams, and lead with purpose, compassion, and confidence.

The conference also showcased notable speakers, including Senator Aubyn Hill, Angelita Graham, Mike Lombardi, Judith Veira, Dr Kofi Osei-Kusi, and Kudzai Chigiji, each offering valuable perspectives that reinforced this year’s theme. Dr Coke-Lloyd’s session added a compelling personal development dimension, complementing the conference’s focus on both technical excellence and leadership evolution.

Reflecting on her contribution, Dr Coke-Lloyd shared, “Leadership is not simply about position—it is about purpose, identity, and conviction. When we understand who we are and why we lead, we inspire others with clarity, compassion, and confidence.”

Her presentation was well-received, with participants expressing appreciation for the practical insights and personal growth tools provided.
