The capacity of the Jamaican judiciary to facilitate court participation from remote locations has been beefed up with the donation of two retrofitted mobile units.
The units are retrofitted with audio-visual equipment to facilitate participation in court activities from a remote location.
The donation from the Ministry of Justice is in furtherance of its on-going support to the Courts, equipping them with the modern infrastructure and the technology necessary to conduct business efficiently.
The issue of remote court activities was brought to the fore two weeks ago during the much publicised on-going One Don Gang trial in which proceedings were stalled because of the absence of at least one of the 33 accused, who was down with COVID-19.

It was argued that the trial could have proceeded had there been facilities available for remote court participation.
The reputed leader of the One Don Gang, Andre ‘Blackman’ Bryan, and 32 other alleged gang members are being tried on an indictment with 25 counts under the Criminal Justice (Suppression of Criminal Organizations) Act and the Firearms Act.
The justice ministry has organised a formal handover ceremony for the two retrofitted mobile units to the judiciary. The ceremony will take place at the ministry’s headquarters at 61 Constant Spring Road this Friday (November 5) at 9 am.
Justice Minister Delroy Chuck and Chief Justice Bryan Sykes will bring remarks at the virtual ceremony.
