The Opposition strongly condemns the government’s rigid, bureaucratic approach to distributing modular homes, leaving vulnerable families dangerously exposed as we navigate an active hurricane season in which major storms or severe flooding can strike at any moment.
The government’s insistence on withholding emergency shelter over land tenure disputes is completely unacceptable. Modular and container homes are movable chattels, not permanent fixtures tied to freehold titles. To force displaced citizens to remain exposed to the elements because they lack formal land papers is heartless and procedurally bankrupt.
We call for the immediate dismissal of this rigid policy. Once an individual establishes legitimate pre-disaster occupancy through a voluntary declaration attested before a Justice of the Peace, that evidence must be immediately acted upon.
The time for red tape has passed. Lives are on the line, and the government must act with urgency before the next disaster strikes.
