The authorities have finally brought under control the fire that broke out at the Riverton City waste disposal facility two days ago.

The fire hasn’t been fully extinguished, as there is still smoke hovering over the area. The smoke, which blanketed most of the Corporate Area yesterday, has dissipated for the most part.

The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), which operates the waste disposal facility, yesterday had to call in help from the Jamaica Defence Force for aerial support in bringing the fire under control, which impacted air quality and visibility along Kingston’s industrial belt and port areas.

Some companies had to curtail operations and in one instance, operations at Kingston Wharves had to be suspended during the morning due to heavy smoke and poor air quality caused by the fire.
