Road fatalities set to surpass 400 for the year

The Road Safety Unit (RSU) in the transport ministry is reporting that 396 Jamaicans have lost their lives on the nation’s roadways as of Monday, December 11.

According to RSU, this represents a 14 per cent decline in road fatalities compared to the same period last year.

Motorcyclists accounted for the highest number of road users killed since the start of the year, 32 per cent, followed by passengers, 22 per cent; pedestrians, 18 per cent; and private motor vehicle drivers, 18 per cent.

The parishes of Westmoreland, St Catherine and St Andrew accounted for the highest number of fatalities to date, while males accounted for 87 per cent of fatalities.

Some 488 road fatalities were recorded on the nation’s roadways last year.
