Member of Parliament for South East St Catherine Robert Miller is calling for the leader of the opposition, Mark Golding, to step down from his current role following his recent revelation that he remains a British citizen.

There have been calls for Golding to renounce his British citizenship, however, he contended that the law does not require him to do so to serve in Parliament. The Jamaican Constitution currently allows Commonwealth citizens aged 21 and older to sit in Parliament.

Miller has accused Golding of pursuing tactics to distract from what he describes as grave disloyalty and hesitancy to fully commit to Jamaica.

“I note a barrage of media releases from the opposition PNP which have sought to raise issues which are of absolutely no relevance to the core matter at hand. In a time when Jamaica is on the verge of creating its own head of state by becoming a republic, the British leader of the Jamaican opposition see no ethical conflict in encouraging everyone else to give up British monarch while he retains his privileges and allegiance to the very monarch he is encouraging us to leave,” he said.

He said the matter is further complicated by the decision taken by the opposition not to sign off on the report submitted by the Constitutional Reform Committee.

“This recommendation would certainly, if accepted, disqualify the current British leader of the Jamaican Opposition and is a perfect example of how conflicting interests could open up the decision of the British leader of the Opposition to legitimate questions about his motive,” Miller said.

He said Golding’s position remains untenable and incurable, regardless of what happens going forward.
