Synonymous with cannabis culture, 4/20 is back on the horizon today, and as the name implies, is celebrated annually on April 20.
The day is used globally to mark events and discussions where people
gather together, (some alone) to consume cannabis while others advocate for its legalisation.
The most hilarious rumour is that ‘4/20’ is the code police officers use to signal to each other that marijuana smoking is in effect, while others attribute the date to a Bob Dylan song.
However, the most popular view is that the unofficial holiday’s origin can be traced back to the 1970s at the San Rafael high school in Marin County, California.
A group of students, known as the “Waldos,” used to hang out by a wall, came into possession of a map that they thought would take them to a field full of marijuana.
With the map in hand, they met at 4:20 pm and eagerly tried to locate the crop.
While they left empty-handed that day, 4/20 became their thing and the term began to spread among their friends.
Though cannabis is widely acknowledged as simply a plant, it does have the effects of a typical drug, which heightens the perceptions or functions of the body.
However, those heightened functions are due to chemicals known as cannabinoids found in the plant, which have valuable, therapeutic effects on its users who experience chronic pain, epilepsy, lack of appetite or creativity and insomnia.
Today marks the 50th anniversary of 4/20 and the Jamaican cannabis industry is having a field day with it as they are expecting sales to skyrocket.
Ever since the onset of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, multiple businesses have been ‘holding the faith’ to continue their daily operations, but today will be the day local dispensary owners will release a sigh of relief as there is at least one day designated to their businesses thriving even with the curfew restrictions.
