North America-based, Jamaica-born brother and sister healthcare workers Garfield and Sandra Lindsay have much to celebrate these days.

The siblings, whose family roots lay in Palmers Cross, Clarendon, have recently graduated with Doctors of Philosophy (PhDs) degrees in health sciences from AT Still University in Arizona.

The Lindsays will talk about the family bond that served as mutual motivation and the values instilled by their paternal grandmother who was a teacher when they join live, this Sunday, Deiwght Peters on the latest episode of his top-rated Television Jamaica-aired eponymous talk show.

ANOTHER EXCLUSIVE

A senior critical care nurse based in New York, Sandra hit global headlines last December when she was officially acknowledged as the first person to receive the Pfizer BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine in the United States. In what many media powerbrokers described as a master stroke of genius, shortly afterwards, Peters secured the ultimate coup -a Caribbean exclusive (and the first interview out of the United States) of the news-making Jamaican-born nurse.

In a widely watched TV moment, Lindsay was Zoom-ed in exclusively on Rolling with Deiwght Peters, to share her experience and to encourage her fellow Jamaicans to get vaccinated. In a seamlessly calculated Peters-organised, made-for-TV surprise moment, Prime Minister Andrew Holness was Zoom-ed in and heaped praises on Lindsay for being a trailblazer and an advocate for vaccination.

“I vividly recall the absolute shock on Sandra’s face when the prime minister joined the call, one of the biggest surprises ever on local TV. It was a hectic coordination with Jamaica House to get that moment and I absolutely appreciated it,” Peters recalls.

Mere months later, a newly-minted Dr Sandra Lindsay returns to continue conversation with Peters, but this time introduces her equally-titled, Maryland-resident respiratory therapist older brother, Garfield. The elder Lindsay informed that “Sandra pursued doctorate studies at AT Still in global health while, given my passion for leadership, I did a double concentration and pursued leadership and organisational behaviour as well.” 

THE LINDSAYS TALK EDUCATION

Having long shared mutual interests in continuing education, Sandra revealed to Our Today that “Garfield and I have been dreaming together since we were growing up about what we would like to become. As adults we have many conversations about our goals. My goal was to complete a MBA and after I enrolled, he also enrolled to complete his MBA”.

She added: “We did not plan to go on to do a doctorate right away but at the completion of my MBA, I felt there was a calling for me to keep going so I did my research and enrolled at AT Still. After Garfield completed his MBA, he enrolled in the doctoral programme as well.”

The Lindsays’ joint appearance is a point of unbridled joy for Peters, whose show’s ethos of celebrating well-earned successes of Jamaicans across the world continues to captivate loyal viewership each week.

“My heart is full with utter love and admiration for the sense of purpose that these two have maintained in respect of their aptitude towards learning and development,” Peters said.

“We all could learn a valuable lesson or two in persistence and from them.”

Meanwhile, the history-making nurse sees the opportunity to share tales of her educational journey with her sibling as one she hopes can “serve as an inspiration to young ladies and gentlemen and demonstrate they can be anything they aspire to be with focus, resolve, hard work and confidence”.
