Principal of Mona High School, Keven Jones has apologised to the students and staff at Jamaica College, promising that students who stormed the institution during a celebratory march after winning the coveted Manning Cup football title will be punished.

In a viral video of the rowdy celebration on Monday, students and supporters of the school were seen hurling expletives at security guards at Jamaica College, simulating gunshot sounds as they stormed the campus, which disrupted classes.

In a statement following the incident, Jones condemned the actions of the students involved.

“This is most unfortunate and a flagrant disrespect, not only to Jamaica College, but also to Mona High School,” the principal lamented.

He added: “While we have not yet identified the perpetrators of this most disrespectful behaviour, I can assure you that they will be caught and the necessary sanctions applied.”

Jones noted that the students’ actions do not reflect the values of Mona High.

“We would like to use this opportunity to apologise to the staff and students of Jamaica College and the wider community for such distasteful behaviour. We sincerely hope that this unfortunate event is never repeated,” he said in scolding his charges.

Also addressing the incident was the head football coach of Mona High School, Craig Butler, a former student of Jamaica College.

In a post on his social media handle, Butler expressed disappointment with the actions of students and supporters as he apologised to his alma mater.

“Growth involves making mistakes and growing from them. I am, indeed, disappointed and send my apologies to my alma mater for this unfortunate and distasteful event. We are neighbouring schools who should support each other. I have been to several games supporting my players at Jamaica College this and every year, and I am disheartened. This is a huge disrespect to me, to Mona, and Jamaica College, and this is not what I have been working so hard to instill,” he wrote.

Butler, who started coaching football at Mona High three years ago, successfully led the team to claim their first Manning Cup title. Mona High beat Hydel High School 1-0 in the finals of the competition on Friday.

Jamaica College was the defending Manning Cup champions, having won last year. The school is known for its football prowess, having won the Manning Cup title an enviable 31 times.
