S Hotel in Montego Bay has rolled out a major project—“S for Shelters”—aimed at building 60 homes worth more than $21 million for Jamaican residents who lost their houses as a result of the Category 5 Hurricane Melissa.

The effort was sparked by widespread devastation across the island and reinforced by emotional appeals from international guests who expressed concern for affected Jamaicans. As a Jamaican-owned property, the hotel has positioned the project as part of its commitment to national recovery and community support.

Three homes have already been delivered—two in Hartford, Westmoreland and one in Black River, St Elizabeth—with construction underway on additional units. The hotel’s project team is working rapidly, targeting the completion of two to three houses per day to ensure families are sheltered before the Christmas season.

Beneficiaries are identified through S Hotel employees who live in impacted communities and can verify individuals who have lost their homes, including vulnerable residents such as a paralysed man who received the first completed unit.

Each structure is a 10×12 one-bedroom wooden home, designed to be sturdier than typical board houses and expected to last up to a decade with proper maintenance.

The hotel’s project department has refined its building process to the point where two houses can be erected within 24 hours, significantly accelerating the relief effort.
