World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka defeated 16th seed Naomi Osaka 6-2, 6-4 on Tuesday, March 10th, 2026, to reach the quarter finals at Indian Wells.
This victory marked their first encounter since the 2018 US Open fourth round, where Osaka had previously defeated Sabalenka. This time, the 27-year-old Belarusian was too strong for the 16th-seeded Japanese star, wrapping up the match in just 80 minutes.
Osaka started confidently, but Sabalenka quickly found her rhythm, breaking serve early and dominating with powerful backhands to take the first set 6-2.
In the second set, both players held serve at first, but Sabalenka seized control with a key break at 4-2 and then served out the match. Sabalenka, last year’s runner-up, will now face Canada’s Victoria Mboko in the quarter-finals.
