Sagicor Group welcomes new Data Protection Act

Sagicor Group Jamaica is welcoming the new Data Protection Act, which took effect on December 1, expressing its support and commitment to the new law.

The implementation of the act marks a significant milestone in safeguarding the privacy and security of individuals’ personal data in the country.

Sagicor, one of the leading financial conglomerate in the Caribbbean says “it and all its member companies, recognises the importance of establishing data protection measures that are aligned with international best practices and standards”.

Sagicor adds “the new legislation will provide greater transparency, accountability, and control over how personal information is collected, used, and stored by organisations operating in Jamaica.”

The financial conglomerate maintains that it has always prioritised the protection of customer information and has continually invested in technology systems and security protocols. With the introduction of the Act, Sagicor reaffirms this commitment to a higher level of data privacy and security for its customers.

Commenting on the new law coming into force, Sagicor Group Jamaica president and CEO, Christopher Zacca says, “data protection is of paramount importance in today’s digital age, where the volume and sensitivity of personal information being processed and stored are increasing exponentially. We welcome the new Data Protection Act as it provides a framework for companies to responsibly handle personal data.” 

Committed to protecting clients’ data 

He points out that Sagicor has always been committed to the protection of its clients’ data and information. The new law, Zacca says “provides additional internal and external scrutiny and focus on our mission to serve our customers securely, fairly and transparently”.

Under the new Data Protection Act, individuals will have enhanced rights regarding the control and management of their personal data, including access, rectification, erasure, and the right to be forgotten. Sagicor is committed to upholding and respecting these rights, ensuring that customers have full control over their personal information.

To support the successful implementation of the Data Protection Act, Sagicor clients have access to information about their data, how its processed and protected from client facing teams and the company’s website. Sagicor also facilitates independent enquiries, complaints and requests from clients wishing to exercise their data protection rights to their independent Data Protection Officer.
