With most Caribbean islands inundated by a fresh wave of Saharan dust, the Jamaica Meteorological Service is today (June 7) advising that mixed cloudy, hazy and windy conditions will persist islandwide.

The Met Service, in its 5:00 am forecast, warned that in addition to a high-pressure ridge and low-level jet stream, the dry Saharan dust will remain over Jamaica until Wednesday.

Its forecast is consistent with meteorological offices in Trinidad and Tobago, St Lucia, St Vincent and Barbados, which have all issued bulletins urging citizens with respiratory ailments and other sensitivities to exercise caution or stay indoors where possible.

Satellite imagery tracking the Saharan Air Layer (SAL) indicates its presence in much of the Eastern Caribbean as well as Puerto Rico, Jamaica and sections of Hispaniola and Cuba in the west.

As Tropical Storm Alex fizzled out after brushing past Bermuda yesterday, the only other regional weather disturbance is a tropical wave south of Puerto Rico.

In the meantime, the maximum temperature expected in major Jamaican cities, Kingston and Montego Bay, is 32 degrees Celcius respectively.
