Samantha Gonsalves, better known by her stage name, Samantha J, is back, recently dropping her new single, Push Ya Luck.
Push Ya Luck, which comes six months after her last single Big Fat Benz, also has an accompanying music video.
On the pop/dancehall track, Samantha J, who appears to be pulling from personal experiences, speaks directly to those who are against her, telling the haters that despite whatever ill-will they may have toward her, she will still rise. She then goes on to warn her adversaries against coming too close, for that would be ‘pushing their luck’.
The ambitious music video, with an apparent ‘music mafia’ theme, was shot in Los Angeles, California. The video sees the singer rejecting the opportunity to join forces with what is later revealed to be a record company attempting to recruit her.
Viewers get to bear witness to the mother-of-one showing off her dance moves and exuding alluring self-confidence in several scenes.
American choreographer Richy ‘Squirrel’ Jackson worked on the video, which was shot by Jamaican director Damian Fyffe.
“Damian really brought the vision to life. He added some great touches to the ideas that we gave him and I am so proud of how the video came together,” Samantha J said in an interview with the Jamaica Gleaner newspaper recently.
The singer went on to note that she has had her fair share of obstacles in the music industry and that, freed from any restrictions, “Now more than ever before, when you hear my music, you are hearing me. I have the creative control to show the true artiste that I am”.
She continued: “Whether it’s through the lyrics, video concepts, and delivery or my live performances, I’m here to share the art and talent that God has blessed me with from I was just a little girl.”
Although she opted not to elaborate, the singer explained that major labels, as well as figures in the industry, took advantage of her.
With the issues now resolved, the 25-year-old is “focused on moving forward to giving more focus on her talent and craft,” as is reflected in the Push Ya Luck music video.
Fans of the Tight Up Skirt singer have been very receptive, expressing their love for both the song and music video.
“Since it dropped I play it everyday and the music video is also great hun it helped elevate me,” one fan wrote.
Another fan, @damianfyffe wrote: “Chuuuune!!! 🔥🔥💥💥,” while @malia_fit commented: “Video is dope!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥❤️ from [Canadian flag].”
