The Samsung Galaxy smartphone series is very popular in the Caribbean and their capabilities are well known.

According to the recently released Canalys quarterly smartphone sales report, South Korean technology company Samsung is the number one seller of its smartphones across the world, accounting for one in five global shipments of smartphones in the second quarter of this year.

So far this year, Samsung has seen a big jump in its sales of the Galaxy S21 model.

Samsung now boasts a global market share of 19 per cent. It is doing very well with its mid-range smartphone models.

Only last week, Samsung reported a 53 per cent jump in its second quarter operating profit. There is strong demand for its chips and electronic products during the COVID-19 pandemic. This has led to a profit of US$11 billion for the second quarter of 2021.

“Third-quarter profit is expected to be even higher on strong mobile DRAM memory chip prices, and peak seasons for mobile and display businesses,” said Park-Sung-soon, an analyst at Cage Investments & Securities.

Despite Samsung coming out on top as the leading seller in the world, its shipments dropped to about 60 million in the second quarter compared to 76 million shipped in the first quarter of this year.

You would be forgiven for assuming that Apple would be the next biggest seller of smartphones but no, that honour belongs to Chinese smartphone maker, Xiaomi with 17 per cent of global shipments.

Xiaomi has the highest rate of annual growth at 83 per cent.

“Xiaomi is growing its overseas business rapidly. It is now transforming its business model from challenger to incumbent, with initiatives such as channel partner consolidation and more careful management of older stock in the open market,” said research manager at Canalys, Ben Stanton.

Xiaomi has increased shipments to Latin America and the Caribbean significantly. It sees sales potential and an underserved market in that region.
