Matthew Samuda is now the newly minted Member of Parliament for North East St Ann.

He was sworn in as the newest MP during the sitting of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, October 8.

Samuda took the Oath of Allegiance, pledging to uphold and defend the constitutional laws of the country and to conscientiously and impartially discharge his responsibilities to the citizens of Jamaica.

His appointment follows the unexpected resignation of the previous MP Marsha Smith. In the recently concluded by-election, Samuda secured 4,820 votes, significantly outpacing independent candidate David Fritz Anderson, who received 216 votes, and Chase Neil from the United Independents’ Congress, who garnered 31 votes.

The by-election saw a voter turnout of just 11.7 per cent.
