The Sangster International Airport (SIA) in St. James on Friday (February 24) welcomed Frontier Airlines’ inaugural non-stop flight from Denver, Colorado in the United States (US).

Edmund Bartlett, minister of tourism, who welcomed the 152 passengers of the inaugural non-stop flight, said that the latest flight has increased to eight the number of US cities into the island by Frontier Airlines, with one more to be added in May.

“I want to say that Jamaica, after today’s engagement – with now 28 main gateways from the US, with connectivity to 200 secondary airports – is the most connected destination in the Caribbean,” he said.

The flight from Denver, which will arrive three times per week to SIA, is one of three new non-stop seasonal flights to the airport by Frontier.

The island also welcomed inaugural flights from St. Louis, Missouri, on Thursday (February 23) which arrive three times weekly and one from Chicago, Illinois, on February 25, which will make the trip once per week.

William Evans, senior manager of international marketing and sales at Frontier Airlines, thanked the tourism stakeholders for their support, noting that the airline would like the number of nonstop flights to Jamaica to get to “double digits”.

Shane Munroe, chief executive officer of MBJ Airports Limited, operators of SIA, also noted that Frontier has rapidly increased flights to the airport since it started operating there two years ago.

“[It is] perhaps the fastest growing airline in terms of diversity of routes to Montego Bay. These three new routes to Montego Bay have great significance for several reasons. One is that they are offering passengers a direct link to the Caribbean, and Jamaica, specifically, is known for its stunning beaches, its vibrant culture and warm hospitality, making it a popular destination for tourists and persons all over the world,” he said.
