Montego Bay’s Sangster International Airport (SIA) has been ranked as the third busiest airport in the Caribbean, according to new data from analytics firm, ForwardKeys.

In arriving at its assessment of SIA, ForwardKeys credits the airport as “notable progress.” SIA is Jamaica’s primary airport hub.

The number one position went to Puerto Rico’s Luis Munoz Marin International Airport, which has seen white-hot passenger traffic growth so far in 2023. Globally, the airport is the 80th-busiest airport the world, up from 110th place in 2019.

The second busiest airport in the Caribbean is Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, which has seen 32 per cent growth since 2019, followed by another Dominican airport, Las Americas in Santo Domingo.  Las Americas has seen 58 percent growth in outbound traffic since before the pandemic.

Rounding out the top 10 are Jose Marti in Havana; Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau, The Bahamas; Queen Beatrix International Airport in Aruba; Grantley Adams International Airport in Barbados; Pointe a Pitre Le Raizet Airport in Guadeloupe; and a third Dominican airport, Cibao International Airport.

Juan Gomez Garcia, head of market intelligence at ForwardKeys, highlights that “Improved air connectivity is a game-changer for Caribbean economies, unlocking unparalleled opportunities for travel retail and hospitality businesses growth. By attracting a surge in tourists, it catalyses economic expansion, drives retail demand, and fosters a thriving business ecosystem.”

Continuing, he cited that, “this surge in connectivity not only boosts revenue streams but also fuels infrastructure development and creates employment, making it a pivotal driver of economic prosperity for businesses in the Caribbean region.”
