Sara Misir, the Caribbean’s first Formula Woman finalist, made a recent courtesy call on Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Olivia Grange, during which she highlighted a desire to put Jamaican women “on the map” for motor sports.
Misir was on the island to continue preparations for the Formula Woman races slated for March 2 and 3 in the United Kingdom. She is one of 50 women worldwide, who were selected to participate from a field of almost 10,000 applicants.
The top two will join the McLaren GT4 team in the 2022 GT Cup Championships, slated for legs in Italy, France, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium and Spain.
As part of Misir’s visit, Grange presented her with a copy of the coffee table read, Jamaican Women of Distinction: Holding Up More than Half the Sky, which showcases 60 distinguished women who have made stellar contributions to the nation in various fields, including sport.
“We are celebrating 60 years of independence and as one of the pioneers for Jamaica’s women in motor racing, we look forward to Sara being a part of this publication in years to come,” said Grange.
Misir first represented Jamaica as a youth equestrian until she suffered a dislocated jaw after a fall in 2016. Misir lauded the minister for the support she has given as she proceeded on her journey into motor racing.
“I’m overwhelmed with emotions because Minister Grange is always so supportive and she shared how much Jamaica is behind me. All I’ve ever wanted to do is make Jamaica proud. I look forward to putting our women on the map for yet another sport,” she said.
Misir was recently named 2021 Motorsport Athlete of the Year by the RJRGLEANER Sports Foundation Awards.
