Suelyn Ward Brown, the school principal involved in the illegal sale of land near Clifton in St Catherine, was offered a J$2-million bail when she appeared in court this morning (October 31).

Earlier in October, Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced the demolition of unfinished illegal settlements at Bernard Lodge in the parish.

Settlers whose houses were destroyed said they paid millions to unnamed personnel to acquire the land, but it was later discovered that these transaction were not valid and illegal.

On investigating the matter, Ward Brown was identified and charged with the fraudulent sale of land. It is reported that she received J$7 million from prospective homeowners.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness meets with residents of the informal settlement in the vicinity of Clifton in St Catherine earlier this month, many of whom saw their homes demolished on this week as part of an effort to crackdown in squatting in the area.

She was charged with breaching the Proceeds of Crime Act and Law Reform Fraudulent Transactions Special Provisions Act.

While in court today, she was also hit with 10 new charges that were not publicly disclosed.

The conditions of her bail stipulate that she is expected to report to the Greater Portmore Police Station twice weekly.

Her next court date is February 17, 2023.
