All schoolboy football matches scheduled for today have been postponed in light of strike action by disgruntled referees.

Ewan Scott, Competition Director at the InterSecondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA), said “the referees have withdrawn their services for the matches today, hence all matches for Saturday, September 28 are postponed”.

However, while Scott did not give a reason, impeccable sources told Our Today that the referees are unsatisfied with the level of punishment handed to Dinthill Technical.

In a match last Saturday between Dinthill and McGrath High, a couple of Dinthill players attacked the referee, resulting in both Maalick Whyte and Shamair Hutchinson being banned for one year.

But the referees wanted more and proposed to ISSA that the school itself, Dinthill Technical, be suspended for a year at least.

Instead, ISSA put Dinthill on a three-year probation which the referees thought was inadequate.

It is understood that the referees made reference to 1997 when a principal was threatened and the entire schoolboy football season was abandoned that year.

As to when they will resume officiating duties remains uncertain until they meet with ISSA again.
