Recognising that science is the way of the future, the Government of Jamaica has indicated that improving science literacy among the Jamaican population will be a key focus over the next year.

The disclosure was made by Daryl Vaz, minister of science, energy and technology, as he made his contribution to the 2022-2023 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives today (May 10).

According to Vaz “Our citizens must learn to speak and understand the language of science.

“To this end the ministry, its agencies and departments, commenced ensuring this legacy in science, through the building of a scientifically literate society, beginning with our children and adolescents.”

Introduction of Classroom to Real World STEM Mentorship Workshop

The minister informe: “that several programmes have been designed, revised and implemented to ensure the popularisation and understanding of science in schools, as well as its promotion as a viable rewarding profession”.

As a key feature of the promotion of science in school, there now exists a mentorship programme in the form of the Classroom to Real World STEM Mentorship Workshop, which is a collaborative effort between the ministry, the Scientific Research Council (SRC) and the National Commission on Science and Technology.

The workshop allows students at a tertiary and secondary level to receive mentorship from renowned STEM professionals.

Vaz noted that the promotional activities geared toward the popularisation of science in school will be ramped up during this fiscal period and will entail the inclusion of scientific conferences and awards ceremonies to encourage and acknowledge scientific achievement.
