Scotia Investments Jamaica recently hosted its Global Investment Advisory Summit and soirée at the AC Marriott Hotel in New Kingston.

The event brought together clients, investors and industry experts to discuss global and local economic insights, Scotiabank’s unique fund management approach, and actionable investment strategies.

The summit featured presentations from Sabrina Cooper, senior vice president of wealth management and CEO of Scotia Investments Jamaica; Marie-Lyn James, recently appointed senior manager of asset management at Scotia Investments Jamaica; and keynote speaker Mark Fairbairn, portfolio manager of multi-asset management at Scotia Global Asset Management, Canada.

During her address, Cooper highlighted the dual expertise that Scotia Investments brings to the table.

“Scotia Investments is uniquely positioned to marry local expertise with international perspectives, as our asset management team here in Jamaica manages the funds you invest in with the same dedication and integrity that we apply globally,” she explained.

“This dual capability ensures that we can offer you diversified and robust investment strategies tailored to both local and international economic landscapes. The past few years have presented numerous challenges in the investment market, from unprecedented economic disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic to volatile global markets reacting to geopolitical tensions and policy shifts. However, as we emerge from these turbulent times, we see a landscape ripe with opportunities,” Cooper added.

Scotiabank Investments offers a range of investment products including mutual funds and unit trust products in both Jamaican and US dollars designed to suit conservative, moderate, or aggressive investors.

The firm provides prudent investment management advice and recommendations that take into account both return objectives and overall risk tolerance. Each asset class is assessed based on its risk-adjusted returns, and personalised investment portfolios are tailored to meet clients’ specific risk and return objectives.

Regularly updated detailed investment policy statements ensure clients are kept informed and engaged with their investment strategies.

Speaking on the importance of staying invested and avoiding pitfalls, Fairbairn shared, “Staying invested allows for the compounding of investment returns over time”.

“One of the greatest tools you have as an investor is to let time be on your side, which allows for you to earn potential returns on top of previous gains. This is most directly visible through compound interest on fixed income or the growth of an equity investment due to reinvested dividends. What historical evidence does show us, over long periods of time, markets are much more likely to deliver positive returns, so by staying invested you can improve the odds that you meet your financial objectives,” he continued.

“The best way to avoid the pitfall of market timing is to have a financial plan, understand that assets can go up or down in the short term, and remain disciplined.”

For her part, James provided insights into the local economic outlook and Scotia Investments’ asset management capabilities, and highlighted the importance of diversification, safety, integrity, and the strength of the company’s fund management.

She also noted the performance of the Jamaican economy, noting that over the last few years, the local market has experienced a relatively stable economic environment, GDP growth, and a low unemployment rate. She emphasised the importance of investing and highlighted what sets Scotia Investments apart.

“Investing is crucial for building long-term wealth and securing your financial future. At Scotia Investments, we distinguish ourselves through our deep understanding of the local market combined with global expertise. This unique blend allows us to provide exceptional investment opportunities tailored to meet the diverse risk appetites and financial goals of our clients. In today’s dynamic economic climate, having a well-managed investment portfolio is more important than ever. Our team’s commitment to leveraging both local insights and global trends ensures that our clients receive the best advice and strategies to grow their wealth securely and sustainably,” shared James.
