Dancehall DJ Sean Paul, although a major supporter of Shenseea, believes the dancehall vixen made a wrong move in her decision to fully delve into the world of R&B/Pop so early in her career.

The singjay, who released her ALPHA album in March of this year, has faced major backlash from fans, who have critised her for ‘selling out’ with her change in sound.

The once hardcore dancehall artiste, who made her breakthough in 2016, became a favourite among locals. The star, however, shared that she would make changes to her sound after five years in the business, a vow she has stuck to, as is evident with the release of her debut album.

The Gimmie Di Light artiste, who joined the Breakfast Club for an interview yesterday (April 27), spoke at length with hosts Charlamagne Tha God, DJ Envy and Angela Yee, describing the young artiste’s move as “disappointing”.

Having years of experience with non-Jamaican genres, the DJ said: “I think that it’s a little early in her career to be like… all of a sudden pop. Like we have had people from our genre pop off and [do] a pop song.”

He went on to note that the R U That artiste did seek his advice prior to releasing her album, however not having heard the entire album and judging from their collaboration, which he described as “reggae oriented”, the superstar encouraged her to, “keep doing what you doing”.

“My thing with Shen is that she came dancehall, she spitting dancehall you know I mean, people love her for what she did on that Crocodile Teeth, on the freestyle. Like yow, we waan hear that, they hungry for that and then I mean you can always diversify but…for me it was a likkle disappointing in that respect,” he added.

Arguably second to Bob Marley in international reach, Paul lauded her abilities, but stated that her approach with crossing over should have been gradual rather than all at once.

“Right now she going hard and sometimes you going hard you want people notice your talent. But they don’t have the aptitude to take all that in yet. Yuh affi give it to them piece by piece, butter the bread little bit and feed it to the people before you put all that peanut butter and jelly and all that over it,” he explained.

Although disappointed in her decision to deviate from solely dancehall so soon, Paul stressed his love for the artiste and her abilities.

“But let me state right now, I love Shenseea. I think…from the first time [I’ve seen] her doing her thing, it was basically Instagram, I was yow, ‘Who dis girl?’, I got to know her in the studio, I’ve written with her and she have a potent pen man. She’s dope that way,” he said.
