The Jackass River Bridge has collapsed, rendering sections of Townhead roadway in Westmoreland impassable.

The bridge is said to have collapsed due to heavy rains experienced in the parish over the last two weeks that resulted in flooding.

The Tollgate to Bushmouth roadway serves several rural communities including Truro Gate and Townhead. Additionally, the roadway serves as a link to the neighbouring parish of Hanover, by way of the Bushmouth community.

The National Works Agency (NWA) is advising motorists to use alternate routes, noting that the team is now conducting a necessary damage assessment.

Janel Ricketts, community relations officer for the NWA’s Western Region, said residents who wish to access the Bushmouth community and its environs might use the alternate route via Gooden’s River and Glasgow.

Similarly, commuters travelling from the direction of Bushmouth, towards the Townhead community and the neighbouring town of Savanna la mar, should travel via Riley and Glasgow.
