The Meteorological Service of Jamaica has activated a flash flood warning for low-lying and flood-prone areas of eastern and south-central parishes on Tuesday (October 5).

The Met Service, in a bulletin this afternoon, said the flash flood warning is issued for St Mary, Portland, St Thomas, Kingston, St Andrew, St Catherine, Clarendon, and Manchester. The warning, which takes immediate effect, lasts until 5:00 pm Wednesday, October 6.

In its observation, the Jamaica Met noted that a broad trough across the central Caribbean is producing unstable weather conditions for the island.

“Observational data indicate that moderate and at times heavy showers and thunderstorms have been affecting sections of eastern and central parishes since early this morning,” the Met Service said.

The forecast is for cloudy conditions with periods of showers and thunderstorms, which could be heavy at times to continue to affect most parishes, with the greatest intensity over eastern and central parishes throughout today into Wednesday.

Additionally, strong gusty winds are expected to affect sections of mainly southern parishes.

Sea conditions will deteriorate in the vicinity of showers, thunderstorms, and gusty winds. Fisherfolk and other marine interests, especially on the south coast, should exercise extreme caution until conditions improve, the Met Service warned.
