Selector Fabian Allen’s use of the moniker Mixmaster Ovadose stretches back to 2007 when he was known as DJ Killer.

Also a dancer with the Ocho Rios-based Mad Links Dancers, he entered the Dancin’ Dynamites competition but was told the ‘killer’ terminology would not be allowed in the contest.

“A Dancin’ Dynamite mek mi change mi name because mi used to name DJ Killer and when mi enter the competition Jenni Jenni say dem nah guh work wid di killer thing on the TV.  Ah deh suh di name Ovadose come een and from deh suh a just Ovadose right through, Mixmaster Ovadose,” said the selector.

After two successful years with Mad Links, Ovadose started concentrating fully on being a selector, a craft he fell in love with when his father introduced him to it in the 1990s when he was a youngster.

After exiting the dance arena in 2008 it took the selector a while to cement his name in the business.“Mi really get the breakthrough in 2013, when people start hear me and say, ‘Ah who da selecta deh? Da yute deh wha play las’ nite, him bad enuh, ah wha him name?’ Suh people start reach out and from deh suh mi jump out, no turning back, a jus greatness from deh suh.”

Over the years, Mixmaster Ovadose has increased in popularity, with his ratings as a selector putting him amongst the best in St Ann and also along Jamaica’s north coast.

But Allen was not satisfied with just being a selector, he wanted more. Exploring his options, Mixmaster Ovadose recorded a couple of songs over the years and even though he has taken a break from recording he plans to return as a producer to expose new talent.

Additionally, he has cemented his 12-year-old event, Detention, as one of the shows that fans look forward to each year in the Ocho Rios region.

A few years ago, Allen introduced his own sound system, Relevant Unit, to the scene, with the sound increasingly developing a following. With all that in the bag, he says he continues to work hard to improve as a selector. And that is paying off in a satisfying way, with 2025 beginning with a band and not slowing down, in terms of bookings for the selector.

“To be honest, mi grateful fi everything wha a happen right now in my career. A lot of shows, a lot of main events. The year kick off great, one of the best year playing music, in terms of the events that just a roll in. The big promoter them a reach out to me an’ is a good look fi me right now with bookings for a whole heap ah events – Manchester, Portland, St Mary, St Elizabeth, St Thomas. Yow, a just greatness!”

Allen says there’s no secret to his success – it’s just the hard work he has been putting in. And he’s grateful for the support he gets from his fans. Mi jus waa big up and thanks to mi fans dem. Mi love unnu, mi appreciate unnu, mi grateful. Mi haffi big up mi wife too. She nuh lef’ mi side.”
