TECHART’s Taycan 4S was an exercise in subtlety from the company. By accenting Porsche’s already lovely lines it stood out with its quality body kit and wheel upgrade.

Electric vehicles (EV) were bigger in presence at the 2022 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show at the Las Vegas Convention Centre in Las Vegas, Nevada, than previous years.

As the automotive market expands its EV offerings and the number of companies doing EV modifications increases, SEMA has responded with SEMA Electrified.

Outside of several brand names having their EV models on display, EVs were given their own section of the show and heavily promoted.

Here are the top three EVs from SEMA 2022.

3: TECHART Porsche Taycan 4S

The Taycan is already a potent sports sedan. In 4S trim owners get 522bhp from a pair of electric motors. All-wheel drive, launch control and an overboost function means 60mph can be done in 3.8 seconds. Top speed is governed to 147mph. These are numbers comparable to some of Porsche’s own dedicated sports cars. As an EV there isn’t much that can be done to increase performance, but the Taycan is drop dead gorgeous, and that’s where famed Porsche tuner TECHART turned their attention. Known for their crazy high horsepower builds and sometime outrageous body kits — several of which were at their booth, the fact that the Taycan even was on the radar of a mainstream tuning company somewhat legitimises EVs as new ground for modifications.

There are no power upgrades to the Taycan, yet. Those remain locked away in the zeros and ones circulating around the fibre optic network of the car. TECHART went the more subtle route, enhancing the already beautiful lines of the Porsche. There’s a new front spoiler, side skirts, rear diffusor, rear spoiler and a set of the brand’s Formula VI wheels. The irony is that the understated nature of the TECHART Porsche Taycan made it stand out against the masses of other modified EVs at SEMA.

2: Dodge Charger Daytona SRT Concept

An all-electric American muscle car. Heresy! Witchcraft! Actually cool.

It’s hard to beat OEM, and Dodge chose to show not only the way forward for their brand, but also tackle the next tough frontier for EVs, American muscle car fanatics. The Charger is popular, and the name is part of the muscle car pantheon. Rival Ford took heat when it applied the Mustang name to an EV SUV. Reception to the Dodge Charger Daytona SRT Concept has been good, most likely because the nameplate is still attached to a car.

Having announced its next performance cars will be EVs, there couldn’t be a better replacement in sight. Visually, the Dodge Charger EV retains all the classic muscle car lines, looking like a future version of a retro car. The car will have from 455bhp to 670bhp based on which of the voltage systems is equipped, 400-volt or 440-volt respectively. There are plans for an 800-volt architecture. If the first all-electric muscle car wasn’t techy enough, there was a fancy tri-coat Stryker Red paint, and 18-inch carbon fibre wheels to hold the 305mm drag radials.

Then there’s the sound. No, it isn’t equipped with the Active Performance Sound from Borla Performance, the Dodge Charger Daytona SRT Concept has the world’s first Battery Electric Vehicle exhaust system. That’s right, an EV with an exhaust system! Using what Dodge is calling a Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust, the Charger EV has a one-of-a-kind sound signature.

1: Lexus Electrified Sport

The absolutely stunning Lexus Electrified Sport.

Concept or not, this is the best EV of SEMA 2022. Free of the limitations of an internal combustion engine, the Electrified Sport is impossibly breath-taking from any angle. It’s impossibly low and curvaceous still maintaining the profile of the traditional two-door sports coupé. Called the spiritual successor to the iconic LFA super car, which has what the world considers to be one of the best exhaust notes in the world, having a noticeably silent EV might be pushing that connection a bit much. Still, Lexus is targeting a low two-second 0-60mph time and 430 miles of driving range from solid-state battery technology it’s working on.
