Tasked with reviewing the proposal for an Elderly Care and Protection Act, the Senate Special Select Committee held its inaugural meeting at Gordon House on Wednesday (December 18).
The committee is inviting members of the public to share their opinions on what such legislation should include. The deadline for submissions is February 15, 2025. It also wishes to hear from the relevant ministries, departments, and agencies regarding any existing legislation protecting the elderly, current systems in place and any gaps in legislation or policy that need to be addressed.
Committee members have committed to taking a holistic approach to issues affecting the elderly in the review process. The Special Select Committee comprises seven senators, namely:
- Senator Sherene Golding Campbell as chairman
- Senator Charles Sinclair
- Senator Kavan Gayle
- Senator Dr. Saphire Longmore
- Senator Professor Floyd Morris
- Senator Sophia Frazer-Binns
- Senator Gabriela Morris
A private member’s motion on the proposal law was brought forward by Opposition Senator Professor Floyd Morris and approved by the lower House of Parliament on October 25, 2024. In extending the invitation to receive public feedback committee chairman, Senator Sherene Golding Campbell remarked, “We want as broad, wide, and robust participation as possible from the public.”
