Following a difficult year, eager fans of Jamaican artiste Sevana, whose real name is Anna Blake, can now breathe a bit easier as the singer has returned from the shadows and has once again taken the mic into her own hands with the release of her new single, Brand New.
Brand New comes as the first in a string of pending releases for one of the island’s favourite sirens. The song was debuted on Monday (February 21) in a performance on the coveted COLORSxSTUDIOS stage, a German music performance platform that aims to introduce and showcase emerging artistes.
The sultry and soulful original, which was produced by Kelsy Gonzalez of American R&B band Free Nationals, is a reminder of Sevana’s range. Driven by Gonzalez’ delicate bassline, and caressed by Sevana’s own background vocals, listeners are covered in her silky vibrato and carried by the groove with sensitive ears sure to prickle, and belly-bottoms tremor at the singer’s subdued, but still intricate dalliance in the octaves.
Fans have been quite eager for a follow-up to the organically successful single, Mango. Brand New enters airwaves at a significant time for the singer, just three weeks shy of Mango’s anniversary.
The singer shared her upcoming plans for new materials in the near future, noting that she would challenge herself to make a release as often as possible.
“I’m going to release one single every other month, or I’m going to try,” Sevana offered. “I’m going to challenge myself.”
The singer has already begun her challenge, as she the recently wrapped up a performance for the Dubai EXPO in Dubai, representing the island alongside other local artistes.
The singer expressed the joy she felt with being able to represent her country, noting, “It is especially fulfilling to be asked to represent my country with my art. I’m going to use that moment as the opening stage, the set-up for 2022.”
Along with smash hit Mango (2020), Sevana, under Protoje’s In.Digg.Nation Collective label, Sevana has released hits such a Bit Too Shy (2015), Nobody Man (2019)and If Only You Knew (2020).
Monday’s (February 21) performance, marked the singer’s comeback to music, following her involvement in a fatal car crash.
In May of 2021, the singer was driving along the Scott Cove main road in Westmoreland when her vehicle, a Honda City, collided with a Honda Fit traveling in the opposite direction.
From the head on collision, Ordia Cordel a passenger of the Honda Fit, suffered severe injuries and, five days after being admitted in hospital, was pronounced dead.
The singer on November 23, revisited the court where she faced a charge of causing death by dangerous driving.
The case has been set to go to trial in October of this year.
