Shaunae Miller-Uibo and Jereem Richards scored impressive victories in the 400m and 200m respectively, at the USATF Grand Prix, Oregon Relays in Eugene today (April 24).
There were the only two Caribbean athletes who won but several others delivered impressive performances as they continue to prepare for the Olympic Games this summer.
Miller-Uibo, the imperious Bahamian, who just three weeks ago opened with a world-leading 22.03 over 200m in Clermont, Florida destroyed a quality field to run a world-leading 49.08, a new facility record. The time eclipsed Sanya Richards’ previous record of 49.29 set back in 2012.
She was more than a second clear of the USA’s Lynna Irby who battled with compatriot Jessica Beard for the minor placings. However, it was the former who managed to pull away to clock 50.28 to Beard’s 50.38.
Richards, a Trinidadian, who joined Miller-Uibo’s camp in the offseason, was in complete command in the Men’s 200m that he won in a season-best 20.26. He was more than a match for the USA’s Josephus Lyles who clocked 20.46 for second place.
In third was Jamaica’s Christopher Taylor, who clocked 20.73 for third as he continues to make his way back from injuries suffered during his stellar high school career that threatened his professional career.
Two Jamaican women – Kemba Nelson and Christania Williams – made it into the final of the Women’s 100m. Nelson clocked a wind-aided 11.08 to advance while Williams clocked 11.28 to make the cut. Her time was thousandths of a second faster than Briana Williams, whose 11.29 saw her just miss out.
In the final, Blessing Okagbare was impressive winning in 10.97s, well clear of Morolake Akinosun of the USA who was second in 11.09. Daryll Neita of Great Britain was third in 11.19. Close behind her were Jenna Prandini of the USA, who was given the same time – 11.22 – as Nelson, who was fifth.
Williams pulled up midway the race and finished ninth.
Trayvon Bromell won the Men’s event in 10.01 over Noah Lyles 10.17 and Liberia’s Emmanuel Matadi 10.19.
Jasmine Camacho-Quinn won the women’s 100m hurdles in 12.46 in dominant fashion. The Puerto Rican, who ran a world-leading 12.32 last weekend, was miles clear of Jamaica’s Britanny Anderson, who ran a season best 12.82 for second, just edging out Taliyah Brooks of the United States who got 12.83.
Donald Scott of the United States won the Men’s triple jump over Jamaica’s Clive Pullen and many time global champion Christian Taylor. Scott jumped 16.89m while Pullen got a season best 16.55m. Taylor was third with 16.52m.
The Women’s shot put was badly affected by rain that caused some of the throwers to slip and fall. However, it ended with the USA’s Chase Ealey winning with a mark of 18.93m. Jamaica’s Danniel Thomas-Dodd put 18.46 for second.
Third went to Jessica Ramsay of the United States, who produced a mark of 18.40m.
Michael Norman won the Men’s 400m in 44.67 over training partner Rai Benjamin, the son of former West Indies fast bowler, Winston Benjamin, who clocked 44.98. It was a US 1-2-3 as Justin Robinson was third in 45.55
