With ALPHA‘s release just a few days away, Jamaican dancehall artiste Shenseea is continuing her United States blitz and, in a Wednesday (March 2) appearance on MTV Push, the singjay performed two of her most recent singles and shared some history behind the tracks.

Clad in a skintight body suit and black calf high heels, the Good Comfort deejay performed her R&B single R U That, which features United States-based rapper 21 Savage, and her controversial record, Lick, featuring American rapper Megan Thee Stallion.

MTV Push, curated by MTV’s Music & Talent US & International teams, connects fans across the globe with emerging artistes each month through live performances, exclusive broadcast premieres of music videos, interviews, video content and more.

The artiste gave two separate performances, both sung on tracks and accompanied by a pair of male and female dancers. Singing along to her own background vocals, the artiste gave quite modest performances in what appeared to be a dungeon.

For Lick, the artiste made a wardrobe change to a Rihanna Work-inspired outfit and performed a choreographed routine alongside her female dancers to Meg Thee Stallion’s verse.

As the deejay sat to talk with the MTV Push, she revealed the inspiration behind her records.

When speaking on the 21 Savage feature, she noted that often men, when in pursuit of women, portray themselves as being able to do everything for them. However, once that pursuit transforms into a connection between the man and woman, the latter realises that men are great until they have to be great.

An unusual sound for the Jamaican artiste, R U That‘s original demo, according to the artiste, was very raw, which forced her to revisit its lyrical content before releasing it.

“It was filled with a lot of expletives and so the only thing I revisited it to do was tone it down a bit. But I sent the expletive one to 21 and you know he’s ‘gang gang’ so he loved it and be like ‘yo this song is a hit’ and I was ‘Word, you gonna jump on it?’ and he actually did.”

Lick, which garnered much attention upon its release, is a song the artiste admitted she always wanted to do. The not-so-subtle track provides details around both artistes’ need for their sexual partners to provide them with oral sex.

“I always wanted to an oral sex song because I am known for expressing myself in the most raunchiest way that nobody expects. So I always wanted to do a song like that and I did it. I did some melodies first and then I put words to it. I figured that it would [be] like a more club-type, ratchet-type track, that’s what I wanted,” she explained.

The star shared that she felt Megan would be the best fit for track and, after crossing paths with the rapper, she shared the record with her.

“I felt like Megan would be dope on it. The next day I went to Megan’s party and we connected. And the following day I sent her the track of what I did. She loved it and was like, ‘yo we got one, we got one!’.”

Throughout the interview, fans learn a bit more about the artiste through ‘get-to-know-you’ questions.

In the ‘Behind The Gram’ feature, which requires artistes to recount how they came to be in a particular outfit posted to their Instagram account, the star revealed that Kanye West was the person responsible for styling her for the Donda listening party.

ALPHA is set to be released on March 11. The album is now available for pre-order here.
