The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, which has swept the world, has had a particularly devastating impact on the United States, with 330,000 Americans now dead having contracted the infectious disease.
That spells one in every thousand Americans have died from the virus which is now in its second wave.
Over the last three weeks alone, 60,000 have died as a result of COVID-19 and as the year comes to an end, over 19 million Americans are confirmed to have had the infection.
According to John Hopkins University (JHU), over the last ten days, 200,000 daily cases of infection have been reported in the US as the virus spikes and puts pressure on the country’s medical facilities.
It is anticipated that over 400,000 Americans will die from the virus by mid-January 2021, that’s more than the number of Americans who died as a result of World War II.
Since the November presidential election, Donald Trump has been more focused on overturning the result and spending time playing golf at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, than addressing the ravishes of the virus.
The US has had difficulty in getting its citizens to follow mask-wearing and social distancing protocols and is now placing faith in speedily manufactured vaccines which are presently being distributed across the country.
Infection numbers and further deaths are expected to spike again after the Christmas/New Year festive period.
