Dear Minister Bartlett,

I am writing in my capacity as the national president of JUTA, representing all chapters island-wide regarding the serious impact that Hurricane Melissa had on our members who operate under contract carriage arrangements.

The hurricane caused major disruptions across the tourism sector. Many drivers experienced extensive vehicle damage, loss of income, and reduced operations because of hotel closures and low visitor activity especially in the western region.

These setbacks have placed a heavy financial burden on our members, many of whom rely entirely on daily service to sustain themselves and their families.

As you often speak highly of Jamaica’s tourism sector and the strength of the product we offer, it is important to note that one of its main components, transportation, is now in serious need of support. Our drivers play a key role in the visitor experience and cannot recover without targeted assistance.

In light of these challenges, I am requesting that the Tourism Enhancement Fund consider providing a stimulus package or special relief support for the affected contract carriage operators. Assistance in the form of grants, concessionary financing, or any structured recovery support would allow our members to repair vehicles, return to service, and help restore the stability of the tourism industry.

JUTA remains committed to supporting Jamaica’s tourism product, and with your help our members will be able to recover and continue delivering safe and reliable transportation for visitors and locals.
