The Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) has once again expanded its fleet with the addition of six new compressed natural gas (CNG) buses, which account for over 300 seats.

The new buses arrived on the island on Wednesday afternoon and will be added to Portmore routes to alleviate commuting issues facing residents in the area.

According to Minister of Transport Daryl Vaz, two of the new buses will be placed on the No. 3 route, which takes commuters from downtown Kingston to Christian Gardens via Waterford in Portmore, St Catherine. Another two will be placed on the No. 3A route, which takes commuters from Half-Way Tree to Christian Gardens via Waterford.

One bus will be placed on route No. 20, which takes commuters from downtown Kingston to Greater Portmore. The remaining bus will be placed on route No. 20A, which takes commuters from Half-Way Tree to Greater Portmore.

“Another 14 buses are to follow [these] six, which will make an additional total of 20 buses, following the initial 50 buses received in August. The Government is committed to the sustainable improvement and expansion of the JUTC for the benefit of all Jamaicans,” Vaz wrote in a post on social media.

The transport minister previously shared his three-year plan to acquire an impressive 300 alternative fuel buses for the JUTC. The acquisition of the first 100 buses is expected by June 2024.
