Some Jamaicans took to social media yesterday to voice their disapproval about the decision to crown Dr Jordanne Lauren Levy as Miss Universe Jamaica 2023.

During last night’s streaming of the competition, Dr Levy was crowned Miss Universe Jamaica 2023. Robyn Kira Lloyd was announced as the first runner-up, and Deborah Gordon as the second runner-up.

Following the announcement, in several posts on X, formerly known as Twitter, cusers criticised the organisation for its decision, with claims that the competition was rigged and unfair.

The claims about the competition being rigged mainly stemmed from the ‘Question & Answer’ segment.

For her final question, Dr Levy was asked what makes her beautifully confident. To which she replied: “As a medical doctor of the University Hospital of the West Indies, I put myself before the people. My patients come first before all things. I know that no matter what when I’m of service to other people. That’s what makes me beautifully confident”.

During her response, the crowd was restless, with spectators reacting to her comments with disapproval, prompting the title holder to stop in between her response. She was then given another opportunity to complete her answer, to which many objected.

“Miss Universe Jamaica really rigged the competition for their [favourite] to win??? This is what we doing?” said a social media user.

“No cause Miss Universe Jamaica fully rigged the whole show for Jordanne Levy! Who in no shape or form needs J$250,000 to further her already uptown and expensive lifestyle. Like how did she get to redo an answer???,” ranted one user.

Another user also questioned, “When since you can do a redo answer in Miss Universe??? Jamaica explain????”

“I feel every year, we struggle with Q&A in Miss Universe Jamaica. It’s not about the stage presence, but it’s about reiterating the same rehearsed answers over and over. Never changes. We move though,” said another user.

Viewers who watched the competition on television also complained of audio and production issues they believe affected the quality and delivery of the 2023 staging.

“Miss Universe Jamaica is just… I absolutely have to switch the channel. Caan afford fi waste my JPS bill pon dis. Is like di mic dem under water,” said one user.

“Miss Universe Jamaica needs a full revamp and reorganization…what was that? Problem after problem and the people…mama attitude pon International scene..” another wrote.

As winner of Miss Universe Jamaica 2023 Dr Levy will represent the island at the 72nd Miss Universe pageant, to be held in El Salvador on November 18.
