Sonay Kartal is making the most of her momentum.
Fresh off an impressive showing for Team GB at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals, the 23-year-old Brit breezed past American Alycia Parks in Beijing to reach the second round of the China Open on Thursday (September 26).
Kartal looked sharp from the start, breaking Parks three times en route to a tidy 6-3, 6-2 win over the world No. 60. Despite a recent slip in the rankings, dropping to No. 81 after losing the points from her breakthrough WTA title in Tunisia last yea,r Kartal showed she’s still very much a threat on tour.
Up next: A tougher test against 14th seed Daria Kasatkina on Saturday.
But if Kartal keeps this level up, the rankings might start trending in the right direction again.
