An in-form South Africa found its stride and pummelled Afghanistan in a nine-wicket victory in the Twenty20 World Cup semi-final at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad, on Wednesday (June 26).
The resounding victory sends the Proteas into their first-ever World Cup final in any form of the game since 1992.
The Proteas tore through the Afghan batting in less than 12 overs restricting them to just 56 runs at the end of their innings, their lowest ever score in T20 internationals.
Lead wicket-taker for the tournament Fazalhaq Farooqi as well as the Afghan bowlers tried to counterattack. South African opening batsman Quinton de Kock was removed early by Farooqi but Reeza Hendricks and captain Aiden Markram got the Proteas to their target without further losses inside nine overs.
AFG’s David vs Goliaths story at this World Cup ends here but they can bow out of the tournament with pride.
South Africa will now take on the winner of today’s second semi-final between the ICC T20 rank 1 team India and defending champions England in the final on Saturday, June 29.
