Sixty-six-year-old Norman Scott, Mayor of Spanish Town, has been charged with assault occasioning Actual Bodily Harm and Malicious Destruction of Property following an incident at a polling station in St Elizabeth on general election day, Wednesday, September 3.
Reports from the Black River Police indicate that around midday, Scott, who was a PNP candidate for the South East St Elizabeth Constituency, visited the polling station and remained beyond the allotted time. When an agent attempted to advise him that his time had expired, a commotion ensued.
Another agent reportedly intervened in an effort to calm the situation but was allegedly struck in the face by Scott. The mayor’s security detail then removed him from the location.
Police say a formal report was made and an investigation launched. Summonses for the offences were served on Scott on Friday, September 12.
He is scheduled to appear in the Santa Cruz Parish Court on Monday, October 13. He is being represented by attorney Charles A. Ganga-Singh.
Scott has maintained his innocence and claimed that he was attacked by a mob of JLP supporters while he was at the polling station, and his security detail had to rescue him. He said he was able to leave the polling station with the assistance of the military.
