Dancehall veteran Bounty Killer will be honoured with a tribute at the 2024 Reggae SumFest to celebrate his legacy and significant contributions to the growth of the Dancehall genre.
The announcement was made by organisers of the music festival in a post on social media where they asked fans to join them in celebrating ‘The Godfather of Dancehall’ at the highly anticipated event scheduled for July 19 next year.
“Hayo Yallo!! Reggae Sumfest cya too mello, Di Godfather haffi disrupt the treble! uh ready fi dis?!?! Pay di price and come see the Price! Come out to Catherine Hall on July 19th fi see the tribute to the Godfather of Dancehall Rodney ‘Bounty Killer’ Price!” they captioned a video highlighting pivotal moments in Bounty Killer’s career.
The veteran artiste, formally known as Rodney Price, rose to fame in the 1990s with the release of one of his first songs Coppershot, and his highly successful album My Xperience, which spent six months on the Billboard Reggae charts. Since then, he has evolved into one of dancehall’s most influential figures, taking the genre to the international scene to much acclaim.
While it has not yet been revealed which artistes will perform at the tribute, that self-titled ‘Warlord’ shared on his Instagram that he has some thoughts on who should be selected.
“I do [have] an idea of who I want to be a part of my tribute, but which of my protégé associates affiliates or allegiances y’all think should be a part of it? And please don’t say Kartel or Vado [because] situations and circumstances beyond their control, but we all know that they both would’ve [loved] to be a part of it salute,” he captioned a photo with the announcement.
The Gun Down artiste is known for his heated rivalries with deejays such as Merciless, Super Cat, Beenie Man, and the incarcerated Vybz Kartel. He was also highly praised for his delivery during the Beenie Man versus Bounty sound clash that went down in music history as an iconic performance.
The Reggae SumFest 2024 music festival is set for July 14 to July 20, 2024. Reggae icon Beres Hammond will perform on the final night of the event.
