The Secondary School Gridiron League (SSGL) is thrilled to announce the kickoff of the 2025 Championship Playoffs, igniting a wave of high- stakes action that showcases the unbreakable talent and determination of Jamaica’s young athletes.

Despite the ongoing challenges across the island, particularly in St Elizabeth parish in the wake of Hurricane Melissa, the SSGL is channelling the electrifying power of gridiron football to unite communities, inspire resilience, and deliver unforgettable moments of triumph.

“Gridiron isn’t just a game—it’s a rally cry for hope, teamwork, and Jamaican pride,” said Jordan Baskett, SSGL leadership. “As we push through tough times, these playoffs give our student-athletes the spotlight they deserve, proving that passion on the field can light up the entire nation. Get ready for edge-of-your-seat battles where underdogs rise, and champions are forged!”

Following the completion of the regular season last week, the top 8 teams are set to clash this weekend in the first round of the SSGL Playoffs. These matchups promise non-stop excitement, with every squad hungry for glory and the national title within anyone’s reach:

  • #1 STETHS hosts #8 UWI Academy
  • #2 DeCarteret hosts #7 Black River
  • #3 St. Mary United hosts #6 Mona High
  • #4 Munro College hosts #5 Newell High

The playoff journey continues with:

  • Saturday, February 7: SSGL National Championship at UWI Mona Bowl

Mark your calendars for February 7 at UWI Mona Bowl—an action-packed extravaganza that’s more than just a championship day! Kick off with:

  • 10:00 AM: Consolation GamePSALM 5:8
  • 11:00 AM: Flag Football Kick Off Classic
  • 12:30 PM: SSGL Flag Football Elite
  • 1:30 PM: SSGL National Title Game

This all-day event is designed to celebrate every level of the sport, wrapping up just in time for fans to gear up for the NFL Super Bowl.

Adding to the thrill, the SSGL is launching the 2025 Flag Football seasons for boys and girls, providing inclusive, non-contact opportunities to build skills and foster fun:

  • Girls’ Flag Football: Preseason matchups start Wednesday, January 28, leading to a Flag Tournament on February 7 at the SSGL National Championship venue.
  • Boys’ Flag Football: Games begin February 13.

Sessions will feature 3-4 teams at school locations for 2-3 games each, building on the success of last year’s format. The season peaks with a National Tournament on March 14 at Brooks Park, powered by “Athletes in Action” for an elevated, international flair.
